Carl is a student of mine that has really touched my heart. Despite his mental "different-abilities", Carl was one of my most dedicated and dilligent job seekers. Unfortunately a fall from the bus in late fall, coupled with his psychological impedments, led to a vocational rehabilitation program to deem him unfit for work - and unfit to continue looking for work (for fear it would diminish his existing independence). Further medical problems (a stroke, several infections, total loss of sight in one eye) have made even school an impossibility. Carl now owes the school $250 in aid repayment because of his class withdrawls and $400 to his apartment (for rent that would have been covered by further financial aid). I have exhausted my financial resources with other needs that Carl has had and would appreciate any support. For a man without the money to buy his own toilet paper, even $5 could go a long way. Thank you for your help.
A little background on Carl: A few years ago, Carl was released from prison (for financial crimes that he is the first to admit was wrong) and has dedicated the rest of his life to making up for this. Despite being diagnosed at age 11 with mental retardation and post traumatic stress from childhood traumas most of us couldn't imagine and dropping out of school before even having solid reading skills, Carl wanted to do better for himself. In prison he taught himself to read and helped to teach literacy classes to his fellow prisoners. Upon release, Carl enrolled at St. Petersburg College to fulfill his dream of becomming a social worker. Carl did very well his first semester taking remedial classes and was excited to start a second semester in January. Late in the fall, Carl fell from the bus and problems have abounded since. Unfortunately, his problems didn't begin until after he enrolled in Spring semester. He had to withdraw from his classes this semester meaning he didn't get the grant money (which he used to pay rent) and has to return the unused portion of the money he was given. In March, I went with Carl to turn in a Social Security application for Supplemental Security Income (Disability) and Medicaid. If approved, Carl will be able to recieve proper medical care for his physical and psychological issues. He will also, if approved, have no problem covering his rent and personal bills. This gofundme is a very limited amount to bridge the gap until they've assessed his application.
Thank you.
