Help with Poppy's Last Medical Bills
Donation protected
Short version:
A lot of money was spent trying to save my dog Poppy's life, and I still lost her. Any funds received will go towards bills incurred, including two hospital stays, one clinic visit, testing, medication/insulin, and cremation.
Long version:
A few months after her 11th birthday, Poppy suddenly stopped eating. After bringing her to the ER, I was shocked to learn that she had undiagnosed Type-2 diabetes despite regular vet visits. I told them to do whatever they could to fix her and took out credit cards and personal loans in the parking lot to pay whatever it took to start treatment. She stayed in the hospital for three nights while they treated her diabetic ketoacidosis alongside aspiration pneumonia and pancreatitis. Poppy was in rough shape, but the doctors were confident she could have a high quality of life once she was stabilized.
My sweet girl came home from the hospital on August 6th and I prepared to give her twice daily insulin injections for the rest of her life. However, she still struggled to eat and receive treatment at home. I fell apart as she failed to improve. I brought her back to her regular vet who confirmed that her ketoacidosis had returned and her blood sugar was still extremely high. She needed to be brought back to the hospital right away. They called ahead to confirm the transfer and I drove Poppy across town.
They said I did well to bring her back in so quickly. Poppy's levels showed signs of improvement and the vets were hopeful that she just needed a little more help to get back on her feet. On the second day, they said she was behaving like a dog again instead of a patient, but one more night under hospital supervision was probably best.
On the third day, her condition worsened drastically. I was told she would need a tracheal feeding tube if I wanted to take her back home. This surgery would be invasive and risky, and even with success her quality of life would be low.
With advice from doctors, friends, and family, I said goodbye to my soulmate of 11 years on Friday, August 12th, 2022.
