In Kelley's own words:
On May 22, 2000 I was a victim of a random act of sexual violence in the Southport Corrider of Chicago. It was 9:30 pm on a Monday night and I had just finished my shift as a cocktail waitress and walked six short blocks back to my apartment. As I turned off of Southport Ave. onto a dark tree lined side street, a man walked toward me, knocked me on my back and pinned me to the ground, and sexually assaulted me. I fought for my life and was able to break free and run to a public place to ask for help and call the police. I was taken to the Emergency Room to receive medical attention and upon my arrival, a young woman from Rape Victim Advocates was there to support me. Because of her and this incredible organization, I was able to receive the support and psychological care and resources I needed to recover. I am eternally grateful and through my own healing, I have been able to help other women and children heal from sexual violence as a psychotherapist.
