I struggle with asking others for help, so this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, especially because I know that everyone is dealing with their own hardships and challenges. But, right now, my mom is in crisis, and I have no choice but to get over myself and ask for the help she needs. This is urgent!! Mom had a stroke on April 13, 2019. She was doing well but is now starting to give up—“failure to thrive,” her nurses say—because she wants to be back in her beloved New York and she feels there’s no point in living if she can’t be back there with her grandchildren and everyone she knows back North. If we don’t get Mom back to NY very quickly, she will shut down until she withers and passes. Our crisis: Mom only receives a social security check and it all goes to the nursing facility; my sisters and I do not have the financial resources to pay the medical transport fee, and the nursing facility’s attempt to get the transportation funded through their outreach programs was declined today, only because they are not at both ends of the journey (they have no presence in New York). Several loved ones have urged me to start a GoFundMe campaign so they can circulate it to make Mom’s door-to-door trip from the facility in TN to the facility in NY possible. So, here I stand, praying for the love and light of loved ones and strangers to help “Ruthie’s miracle” happen. $6,000 gets Mom back to New York in the medically equipped and staffed vehicle she needs. Once in NY, she’ll be in a nursing facility around the corner from my sister’s house, surrounded by all she knows and holds most dear, especially her grandchildren, with life-long loved ones visiting her, showering her with love and memories, encouraging her to thrive and bounce back from her stroke.
