Can you help Nathan & Rusty Avoid Wrongful Eviction?
Hi, my name is Nathan Histed, and I’m in a desperate race against time. On Wednesday, July 3rd, at 1:00 PM, I am scheduled to be evicted from my home. My emotional support animal, Rusty—my best friend and my lifeline—and I will have nowhere to go. I am not a person who avoids responsibility. This crisis is not a simple case of unpaid rent; it is the direct result of a landlord's dangerous negligence and the catastrophic failure of the very systems that are supposed to provide support. I have done everything in my power to resolve this, but I have been met with broken promises and bureaucratic walls at every turn. I’m the host of the mental health podcast RAWHISTory, where I talk openly about resilience and fighting through systemic challenges. Today, I am living my own rawest reality, and I need your help to fight for my home and my safety. This nightmare began with a fundamental issue of safety. For months, the doorknob on my apartment door has been broken and left dangling after a break-in attempt, leaving my home unsecured. My apartment is located in an area that has recently experienced a shooting and daily carjackings. Despite my constant texts, and desperate pleas, my landlord, has refused to fix it. This blatant neglect has left me living in a constant state of anxiety and fear. The immense stress of this situation, compounded by the trauma of previously losing my childhood home not long after my father passed away, triggered a severe mental health crisis. I spent five and a half months on temporary disability and am still on a leave of absence from my job to focus on my recovery. I have exhausted every avenue for help, only to be failed by the people who were supposed to advocate for me. Social Services: To qualify for a critical housing grant, I was told I needed to be employed. Despite my fragile health, I took overnight shifts at a local 7-Eleven to meet their requirements. After submitting my first application for assistance, my representative from Neighborhood Legal Services (NLS), Matthew, assured me the grant was "covered." Trusting his word, I stopped pursuing other options. This was a critical mistake. That application was closed, and I lost precious time. My second application to DSS is now likely to be denied because my minimal income is still considered 125% above the poverty line. Legal Aid: My first legal aid attorney never even showed up for me, admitting over the phone that she is "more like a mouse and...doesn't like to take risks." I was silenced. Matthew from NLS then took over, promising me in court that a grant would handle everything and no repayment would be necessary. Since that day, he has not returned a single call or email. His supervisor has also failed to provide any help. I was abandoned by the very service designed to protect me. I have tried to negotiate a payment plan directly with my landlord, but without the support that was promised, I have no way to stop the marshal from arriving on July 3rd. I am not just fighting for an apartment; I am fighting for my stability, my mental health, and for Rusty. He is a legally and medically recognized emotional support animal. In this storm of instability and fear, he is my anchor. The thought of losing him is unbearable. He wouldn't survive without me, and I wouldn't survive without him. This GoFundMe is my last resort. The funds raised will be used for:
- Stopping the Eviction: To pay the outstanding rent arrears and any associated legal fees to halt the immediate eviction.
- Securing Safe Housing: To cover a security deposit and first month's rent on a new, safe apartment for Rusty and me, should the eviction proceed.
- Holding Systems Accountable: Potentially obtaining proper legal counsel to address the negligence I have endured from my landlord and legal aid.
This is about more than just me and Rusty. It's about every person who has ever been made to feel powerless by a broken system. Your support can send a message that this is not acceptable.
- Donate: Any amount you can contribute will bring us one step closer to safety and stability. Every dollar is a lifeline.
- Share: Please share this campaign on your social media—Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok—and with your friends, family, and community. The more people who see this, the greater our chance.
- Comment: Leave a message of support to help keep this campaign visible and to show that we are not alone in this fight.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Your compassion and your help mean the world to us. The clock is ticking, but together, I believe we can find a way through this.
With gratitude, Nathan & Rusty

The funds (even if full goal is not met) will 100% go to making sure I can provide food and some form of stability for Rusty as long as I possible can until I can get enough money for a new home.
