Rupert came to live in Canada after already experiencing a real tough go. Rupert was rescued from a shelter in Texas after being scheduled to be euthanized when it was believed that he was paralyzed in his back limbs. Thanks to some amazing rescue efforts, Rupert was pulled from this horrible fate and was diagnosed with having a pelvic and hip fractures. Although one of his legs required amputation, he had an amazing recovery and now a 3-legged boy, he was transported to his forever home in Canada.
Unfortunately in August 2021, Rupert had an episode which caused him to be rushed to emergency. Seemingly out of nowhere, Rupert became hypothermic, lethargic, with an extremely low heart rate. After many tests for environmental factors and infection, it was determined that he may have been exposed to an environmental toxin, or perhaps had experienced symptoms of Addison's Disease. Oddly and fortunately, Rupert quickly bounced back as though nothing happened and maintained his happy, sweet, self over the next month.
Then, at the end of September, Rupert once again experienced these symptoms and was rushed to emergency. Tests were preformed, follow up care was provided, yet no diagnosis was reached. Again, Rupert spent a night in emergency and returned to his normal self in the following days.
Now November, Rupert was living his best life on a Saturday afternoon when suddenly he began to vomit, his temperature dropped, he grew pale, and became non-responsive. He was rushed to emergency, placed on fluids and oxygen, and luckily made it through. His glucose levels were high, so a diagnosis of early onset diabetes was provided. With some relief that this was manageable, albeit a lifelong condition, quickly this diagnosis was retracted due to his sugar levels returning to normal and no others signs present. Before being picked up for the evening seemingly having stabilized, Rupert's face suddenly swelled as though he was experiencing an allergic reaction. Again, Rupert's ever expanding medical team was mystified. With both an Addison's diagnosis and diabetes ruled out, Rupert's condition remains a mystery. An allergic reaction as a possibility, however more likely due to pain medication or anti-biotics he received while at the clinic.
Rupert is only 2 years old. He has had the hardest time for such a little guy. He is finally in a home where he is so well loved, yet these ongoing and life threatening episodes continue to plague his otherwise happy young life. At present, Rupert has an amazing and committed family vet who is determined to find out what the heck is happening to this amazing pup. That being said, over the past 6 months of coming into his furvever home, Rupert's vet's bills have exceeded the $5000 mark. We anticipate that in order to reach an eventual diagnosis these costs will continue to climb. Until a diagnosis is reached, we also anticipate more dreaded visits to after hours emergency clinics just trying to keep him alive. Rupert's family veterinary will be posting Rupert's case to the medical community, and we hope that their combined efforts, Rupert's condition will prove manageable and he will go on to live a long and happy life with his family who loves him to the moon.
Rupert's family understands and acknowledges that many people are having a difficult time financially right now. Regardless of the ability to provide monetary support, your thoughts and positive vibes mean the world.
