Join the “Running 4 Change” team! Help empower at-risk teens one step at a time!
Hello, my name is Isaias Franco and I am a special education teacher at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, CA. Two years ago my amazing students & I started an after school running program called “Running 4 Change”. At the beginning of that initial year, my students were considered ‘at-risk’ for an array of reasons: attendance issues, behavioral issues, difficult home lives, low socio-economic status, mental health concerns, learning differences and much more. However, these amazing teens transformed their lives by training for and participating in the Rock & Roll half marathon. By the end of that first school year, the collective GPA of my students increased by 24%, truancy decreased by 15% and for the first time, these students voiced the belief that they could accomplish anything in life!
With the support and generosity of our community, the “Running 4 Change” kids were able to travel to Seattle, Washington last year in order to run in the Seattle Rock & Roll half marathon! Crossing the finish line in Seattle was just the first of many milestones for last years runners! With the HUGE boost in self-esteem as well as learning how to set and reach their goals, last years runners have accomplished so much since Seattle:
-Our first 12th grade runner has applied to and been accepted to numerous 4 year universities.
-Several of our runners have obtained their first part time jobs.
-One of our special education student runners has moved out of special ed classes and into general education courses.
After all of their success, the “Running 4 Change” kids have set their sights on a new marathon goal: participate in the San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon on June 5, 2016! The “Running 4 Change” kids now believe that any goal they set is achievable and are excited for this new challenge!
This is where the “Running 4 Change” program needs your help. We need to raise $10,000 in order to reach our ultimate goal of sending all 10 “Running 4 Change” students to San Diego and running in the Rock & Roll half marathon. Your donation will be put towards the cost of airfare, hotel, proper running attire, food, rental cars & marathon registration fees. We sincerely thank you for helping us fund this amazing experience so that all kids can travel to Southern California regardless of their economic status!
With grattitude & appreciation,
The Running 4 Change Team
