Running For Jed

Tax deductible
In memory of my big brother Jed, who passed away in May of last year, I am running the Waugoshance Trail Marathon with my marvelous friend Mado and sweet cousin Sam on July 13th in Carp Lake, Michigan.

Nearly every summer since Jed was a young adult, he spent a joy-filled week at camp with Volunteers Assisting the Disabled (VAD), a non-profit devoted to providing a community-based camp experience for adults living with any of the 50+ forms of muscular dystrophy. At camp, Jed said his wheelchair became invisible. He was able to climb trees, play with animals, paint, and dance. He connected with fellow campers and volunteers to make lifelong friends who truly understood him.

Jed returned home from camp each year a little brighter from his experiences, gifting us painted animal sculptures and whittled creations he made, always eager to share the stories of his countless adventures. The facilities, volunteers, and campers at VAD Camp empowered Jed to accomplish things he never thought he could.

Many kids who live with muscular dystrophy are not as fortunate as Jed. The emotional and financial cost of living with MD can be astronomical and often causes immense strain on families with limited income. Further, if they don’t have family or friends equipped to take care of them, people with MD are often confined solely to their homes or group homes.

Looking to provide a safe and fun camp experience run by a small group of passionate volunteers, VAD Camp is available at no cost to the campers. However, a typical camp week for 100 campers, plus their attendants and staff, costs VAD approximately $40,000. Since it’s run entirely on funds from generous donors, Mado, Sam and I want to take this opportunity to do our part in supporting and spreading this week of joy!

By reaching our goal we will provide the food, lodging, medical staff, adaptive equipment, attendants and entertainment for 8 VAD campers.

Jed taught us to seek new adventures, cherish time with family and friends, and advocate for others. Because of Jed, we are inspired to find fun ways to push ourselves beyond our limits and out of our comfort zones, together. My goal is to honor him by running my first marathon, advance the meaningful work of VAD, and bring my supportive friends and family along for the adventure!  With your help, we can spread the joy that VAD brought Jed to the next generation of deserving campers!

LOVE YOU ALL!! Thank you thank you thank you
