In May of last year my dad, Rob Singlehurst, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer. In the following months we watched him go through aggressive treatment and eventually neurological deterioration. Dad battled through one round of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but it was too much for his body and he was never fit enough to receive anymore treatment.
Dad celebrated his 54th birthday on Christmas Eve, before passing away on Christmas Day at home, surrounded by his family.
Dad was admitted to Kettering General Hospital once again in early September last year. He was there for 12 days before the decision was made to move him to Cransley Hospice for rehabilitation in the hopes he would be able to walk again and return home. He spent five weeks at Cransley Hospice, all of the staff there, from the nurses to the healthcare assistants, were amazing in looking after him and caring to all of his needs. After the five weeks dad returned home, but the dedication from Cransley didn't stop. We continued to have regular home visits from our family liaison officer who was brilliant, caring for my little sisters and ensuring some form of normality for them. We also had a palliative care nurse from Cransley, who would visit us multiple times a week to provide support, comfort and friendship to dad, and equally as importantly, my mum, during such a difficult time.
Everyone at Cransley has been a crucial support network for my family, and have continued contact with my mum, even after dad's passing.
Cransley Hospice has a special place in my heart, and so I'm running Newcastle marathon on the 4th of May, with 5 of my best mates: Ewan, Cameron, Harry, Harrison and Millen, to give back just a fraction of what Cransley gave to us.
Thank you for your support.
