Hi, I’m Rund, and at just 26 years old, I never imagined I would be facing breast cancer.

My life changed incredibly quickly when I was diagnosed with stage 2, grade 3 triple-negative metaplastic breast cancer, a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer that accounts for less than 1% of breast cancer cases. Genetic testing also came back negative for an inherited breast cancer mutation, which made receiving this diagnosis at such a young age even more unexpected and overwhelming.

Right now, I’m undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy, along with cold capping at each treatment in hopes of preserving as much of my hair as possible. After approximately six months of treatment, I will also need to undergo a double mastectomy with reconstruction, followed by time to heal and recover.

Before cancer, I was working, planning for my future, and living a normal life. Suddenly, so much of that has been put on hold. My days now revolve around treatments, appointments, side effects, tests, and preparing myself for the surgery and recovery still ahead of me.

One of the hardest parts has been the financial impact. My oncologist has declared me unable to work throughout chemotherapy and surgery, and my employer denied my short-term disability claim. This means that while I’m going through treatment, I currently have no income from my job.

• Costs of my upcoming double mastectomy, reconstruction, and recovery
