Dear Friends,
Along with a group of friends, I will be running the Palio half-marathon in Saratoga on September 20th, in aid of my friend Nicholas Kay’s family. I understand that raising money for any cause is sensitive, especially one which has affected some perhaps more personally than others. In considering that, I put myself in the shoes of somebody donating and figured that I would be more inclined to support a cause where 1. Someone is doing something worthy of a donation and 2. The cause is close to my own heart. With that in mind, I have decided to pledge to run 24 races in 24 months. Each race representing a year of the short, beautiful life that Nick lived. For every donation over $50 I would like to hear a cause that is close to your heart. After my initial Palio run for Nick’s family, I will run my other 23 races in aid of these causes selected by YOU. I will find innovative ways to contribute to the charities, whether it be in the form of raising awareness, raising money or volunteering my time. I look so forward to hearing about the causes important to our friends and donors, and even more so to embark on what I expect to be a wonderful learning experience, in honor of my friend Nick .
*Please note that Kevin and Juliana Kay are not aware of this fundraiser, we would like to surprise them when we have reached our goal. When sharing this page, please select the “hide from” feature in the privacy settings of your facebook status*
On December 28th 2014 we lost our beloved friend Nick in a car accident. At only 24, he was taken from us far too soon. It is hard to put into words the effect that losing a loved one has on your life, but for anyone who has ever experienced that loss you know how devastating it is. For anyone who has not, I truly hope that you may never experience that heartache. We think of our shining, happy, handsome friend all of the time. When we consider the pain that we are in, and then look at his family, we wonder quite literally how they get through every day. They are an inspiration to everyone, their strength, courage and endurance in the face of losing their son and brother is remarkable.
Nick’s mother Juliana has suffered in many ways unlike anyone else. If you knew Nick, his mom was the apple of his eye and he too was her pride and joy .Their relationship was clear in everything that Nick said and did, a true product of his mother’s love. Juliana’s outlook, her perspective, her selfless nature and her unwavering adoration of her family has touched our hearts in a way that I cannot explain. While we know that the healing process will take a lifetime, until she can be reunited with her boy, there are ways that we can help to ease the pain. Since his death Juliana and her family have wanted for nothing but the love and friendship of those close to Nick. The one thing they expressed a desire for was the ability to leave the country for his anniversary this Christmas. The holiday season will never again be the same for them, but I know that we can make it that little bit easier by allowing the Kay family to take themselves out of their home and country during that difficult time. To travel during Christmas time is outrageously expensive, and Nick’s funeral costs are still a financial burden on his family. I know that Nick would be so grateful if we could help his loved ones in this way.
With that, we ask you to please consider donating to our cause to help Nick’s family. Any donations up until September 20th will be donated to the Kay family, thereafter donations will be split amongst the 23 other charities chosen by all of you wonderful donors. You will be able to follow my journey, and the impact of your donations, through a blog that I will share on this page.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, thank you from all of those running in his honor and above all thank you from our angel Nick. It is amazing how a little help from many can make such a huge impact on the lives of a few.
