On July 25, 2016, the world lost an incredibly special man, Mr. Larry Covelli. He battled through his cancer with such courage and strength right up to his last breath on the day he passed. His accomplishments in his teaching career at Moon Area School District and coaching XC and track in his short life are far more tremendous than anyone could imagine. He had an undeniable dedication to his students and athletes that he countered everyday. I met Larry over 10 years ago and his enthusiasm for running and all things fitness was so visible almost immediately. He supported his wife, Christie, in her ZUMBA adventures and was a monumental piece of the puzzle when Latin RhythmZ first began. He inspired me to get my running shoes back on after watching him complete a variety of races, triathalons, and coaching his athletes. Larry even completed the South Beach Triathalon only 3 short months before he passed away. His strength and determination was unmatched and so contagious.
After I completed my first marathon in 2012, I vowed that I would NEVER run another one again in my life. NEVER say NEVER. Shortly after his passing, I made the decision to run my second full marathon and run it in memory of Larry. My race bib reads RUN4LARRY and I'll wear it so proudly on May 7th. Every training run I've gone on, I envision him next to me pushing me along my route and cheering me on. When I have a weak moment and think I can't go any further, I somehow find the strength to keep going and I know I'll have that same determination when running 26.2 miles on race day.
I'm asking for your donations leading up to the Pittsburgh Marathon to go toward a scholarship that has been set up in his name by Moon Area High School for high school track students. All funds raised will go directly to this scholarship. Please help me reach my goal to honor this incredible man who was taken from us far too soon. I cannot thank you enough for your support!
