RUN TO DAD

In September of 2018 my life changed forever. My mother, Mary Dale Cox, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Initially in her lungs, it rapidly spread to her bones, limiting her mobility. It was only 11 weeks from diagnosis to her passing away while receiving compassionate care from the amazing Team at the QE2 Health Sciences center in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Truthfully, even 2 years later, writing these words feels surreal. But what is even more surreal is that Cancer is the #1 cause of death in Canada. My story, though unique to me, is shared with many. Though my own grief journey feels like it is only beginning, I know I am not alone.
November 24th, 2020 will mark 2 years since my Mother's passing. Prior to falling victim to this illness, my mother led a very active lifestyle which I am proud to have inherited. To know me, is to know my love for running. This summer, in an attempt to stay motivated during the Covid-19 pandemic, I completed 2 ultra-marathons. (80.2km and 110km) These experiments were met with both celebration, but mostly the question of "Why?" to which I replied "Why not?".
But in saying that, I have realized that people are paying note to these adventures and with my platform I am positioned to help.
On Saturday, November 28th, with the company of friends, I will be participating in operation "Run to Dad". A 103km run from my home in Kentville, N.S. to my childhood home in Windsor Junction, N.S. My goal is to complete this run in 12 hours or less. In doing so, my goal is to raise money and awareness for Cancer research, with 100% of the pledges going directly to the Terry Fox Foundation.
