Run, Kevin! Run!
“…let us run with endurance the race that is set before us looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…” Hebrews 12:1
“but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31
Kevin is a 35 year old husband and father of 2 from Clarksville, TN. He has been in two separate auto accidents, both were pedestrian vs vehicle. Both accidents have left him with life altering injuries. Along with his family, he has prayed for better options for his unusual circumstances. Recently he has been placed on a path that would allow those prayers to be answered! Let us help him…Run, Kevin! Run!
The 1st accident occurred in 2000 when was hit by a truck, while in a driveway. He suffered an L2 spinal fracture that caused complete paralysis in his right leg from the knee down, with his quad, hamstring and glut being very weak. He had a T-12-L4 spinal fusion, received physical therapy for 3 years and used crutches to walk for 2 of those years following the accident. He transitioned into a basic afo (ankle foot orthotic) that allowed him the ability to walk without crutches. Since 2009 he has used an Allard Blue Rocker afo and a plastic afo with a hinged joint, depending on the types of activity he has planned for the day. Both options allow him mobility, yet because of his injuries that mobility is limited.
The 2nd accident was in 2014 when he was in a grocery store parking lot and an elderly man mistook his gas pedal for his brake and hit Kevin’s truck. Kevin was out of his truck about to get his children out of their car seats. As a result of the vehicle hitting Kevin’s truck, the truck’s door hyper extended and hit Kevin. Thankfully no one else was injured, yet Kevin’s body bared the impact and he endured another life altering injury. He immediately noticed significant lower back pain, and his balance was different. He began experiencing numbness and tingling in his legs and eventually noticed weakness in his non-paralyzed leg. It progressively got worse and tests showed he had severe denervation in that calf. After months of continuing pain and loss of normal function in his non-paralyzed leg, further test revealed a cyst on his spinal canal between the T9-T11 from the trauma of the 2nd accident. In February 2016, in an attempt to stop the progression, he had surgery to remove the cyst. Kevin’s weakness in his non-paralyzed leg persists and for the first time he will require an orthotic for both his legs.
So how can we help Kevin to run? How can we help him enjoy activities such as chasing kiddos, playing in the yard or simply going for a long walk with family? We believe we can help him by praying and financially donating to him, so he can receive the ExoSym devices for both his legs.
Kevin met a wounded soldier years ago who wore an ExoSym. It is a device that used to only be available to our military, yet now is available to civilians with severe lower limb injuries, such as Kevin’s. An ExoSym can support function, restore mobility and has even been known to help patients RUN! What a blessing it would be to help Kevin to continue to run his race with endurance and not be weary! He has endured so much and we would love to help him receive the ExoSym devices for both his legs without the financial burden, so that he can do all the things that most of us take for granted!
The ExoSym devices come with a high cost. They can range upwards of $24,000 for both legs and travel expenses to be fitted for them will be significant. The treatment program would include clinical evaluation, fitting process, and an intense training regimen, all of which are in Gig Harbor, Washington and would require at least 2 trips. He cannot even begin the program until he has the funds available to finance his treatment.
Our goal is big, yet we know we serve an even bigger God!
