Emma Runs for WHRC

MISSION

On April 15, I'm running the Boston Marathon on behalf of the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC). Last Spring I surprised myself by running a Boston qualifying time. I decided to take advantage of this opportunity to raise money for one of humanity’s greatest challenges - climate change.

Please contribute what you can - I appreciate you joining me in support of this critically important mission.

WHY WOODS HOLE

WHRC has been repeatedly recognized as the world’s best independent climate change research organization. WHRC studies the global climate system and identifies opportunities to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Scientists then get their findings in front of people who make decisions, like politicians, business executives, and influencers to implement solutions.

4 REASONS TO SUPPORT WHRC

STAR SCIENTISTS / When the New York Times wrote about the latest U.S. Climate Reports, WHRC President Phil Duffy was the first person quoted. Dr. John Holdren was President Obama’s Science Advisor. Dr. Jen Francis was just interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, and PBS to explain how this winter’s polar vortex freeze was related to climate change in the Arctic. Dr. Richard Houghton was part of the team that received the Nobel Prize in 2007 for climate change research. The list goes on.

POLICY / WHRC scientists work with with governments around the world to help mitigate climate change. They helped launch the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Dr. Francis testified to Congress this month on the connection between climate change and extreme weather. More climate change hearings involving WHRC scientists are in the works!

REAL WORLD IMPACT / WHRC is partnered with firms like Wellington Management, an investment firm that manages over $1 trillion, to push the financial industry to correctly price climate risk.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE + DEFORESTATION PREVENTION / Agricultural production in the Amazon is increasing rapidly, but the rainforest is critically important for a stable climate. Scientists are working with Brazilian ranchers and farmers - including one of the world’s largest producer of soybeans - to minimize environmental impact and avoid losing any more forest.

I need to be able to say that I did my part, when I could, to help fight climate change. I know that the problem is too big now to be solved by individual actions. We need to make changes as a collective. By running for the Woods Hole Research Center, I know that I’m helping to make that happen. Please join me and make a contribution that supports science.
