Run for Milimani School's Playground & Classroom

Donation protected

Hello, my name is Quyen and I love running!
For the first time I will use my passion to raise money for a cause close to my heart.

In July 2019 I’ve volunteered in the Milimani Academy in Rusinga island on Lake Victoria. The conditions in this island are not ideal for kids: Malaria, poverty, lack of electricity and suitable drinking water are part of the daily reality.
The Milimani Academy,  a primary school that was funded by the retirement money of Michael Odula RIP, was built to give the children from the Kasawanga village an education close to home at a reasonable price. Currently the school has 135 students from the age of 3-11. Along with education, each day they are served porridge and lunch made of corns and beans, for many that is the only food they’ll get for the whole day.

The campaign’s mission is to help fund 2 projects that are urgently needed:
1. Leveling the existing playground: £311
As part of my volunteering I spent my days doing PE (physical education) classes. Every day I was amazed and inspired by the kids’ ability to run, jump, and play football. The biggest problem was the fact that the playground is an uneven terrain full of sharp rocks and small pebbles. The kids run on their barefoot since they can’t afford shoes, a situation that causes daily injuries. The solution is simple, with only 3 trucks of marram and sand, the playground could be flattened and injury free.
Details of the cost:
Marram - 3 trucks x £90 =£270
Sand - 2 small trucks x £4 = £8
Cement - 5 bags x £6.5 = £33

2. Building a new classroom for grade 6: £763
At the moment, though the school should be till grade 8, there are only classrooms till grade 5. As a result the village children who are at grade 6 and above have to walk everyday for more than 45 minutes to get to other schools.
The total cost of building a 35 square meters classroom to accommodate 25 students is £1,384.
The school has already bought some of the material that costs £121 and construction work can be done by volunteers to save £500 labor cost, therefore the sum needed is £763.

Since the mid-term break starts in 2 weeks and my next marathon is only in October, I’ve decided to run the distance of 42 km next week here in Kenya to raise funds for the campaign. This marathon in the land of the world’s greatest marathoners is to support the better future of Milimani Academy kids - the amazing “no shoes” runners.

I wish to raise enough money ASAP so the work on the playground will be done before September 1st, when the kids get back to school. The campaign will go on till I run the Lisbon marathon on October 20th. After securing the funds for building a classroom before the beginning of the next school year in January 2020, the extra money will be directed to the feeding project at school.

All activities and process will be uploaded on this page.

Thank you for your support!
