On Tuesday 11th, the team from Rugby Rebuilding made it to Mapera DEB. This was in culmination of work that's been ongoing for over three year. This includes renovation works to the school.
The day’s highlight was the distribution of school bags and other stationary from our Canadian donors. As we entered the school gate, the children couldn't hide their appreciation and joy. They welcomed us with excitement and jubilation.
While distributing the bags, the team made a very sad discovery! Ninety percent of the children were barefoot or putting on worn-out shoes and sandals. It is to very difficult walking barefoot in rural Kenya with constant environmental threats like sharp rocks, broken glass, and thorns posing ever-present accidents like cuts and bruised. Having conversation with some of the children revealed that most of them come.f4om homes that can hardly afford a pair of shoes amidst the competing needs of life basics like food, shelter, and medication.
A pair of shoes in Kenya costs Kshs. 1000. This means we will need Kshs. 500,000 and equivalent to $5,000.
This is a unique program with a purpose of motivating the children especially those sitting for their final exams at the end of this school year, contribute towards eradication of absentismand truancy as well encourage the children on the importance of hardwork through mentorship.
