Summary
On February 27th, 2020 we lost our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, Nino, and grandfather Rudy Lucio Sr. after a stint in the hospital. Our family is completely stunned by this sudden tragic loss and we welcome your prayers and support during this tough time. Our family appreciates any other help and support from our extended family and friends because Rudy had one of the biggest hearts around. Any help with funds for Rudy Lucio Sr.'s funeral costs will be for the funeral home, church, and cemetery expenses associated with the services.

Story
October 2017
Rudy fainted at the house, an ambulance was called and then rushed to the hospital (Kaiser) with a temperature of 105, spent 3 weeks in ICU, and was diagnosed with Sepsis. Rudy made a full recovery.

June 2019
Rudy was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (a.k.a. MDS or preleukemia). Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature and therefore do not become healthy blood cells. Early on, there are typically no symptoms. Later symptoms may include feeling tired, shortness of breath, easy bleeding, or frequent infections.  Some types may develop into acute myeloid leukemia. Rudy immediately began chemotherapy treatment via stomach injections for 7 consecutive business days every 4 weeks. During his most recent bone marrow test and 8th round of chemotherapy, we received the news almost ALL of his levels are normalized (white blood cell count, red platelet levels, hemoglobin, blast in his blood, etc. His oncologist believed 8 more rounds of chemotherapy and he will be in complete remission. Rudy felt great he was beating the shit out of this disease.

February 2020
Rudy developed a small cough and possible sinus infection. After a visit to Urgent Care (Kaiser), he was prescribed antibiotics to fight off the infection. On February 20th during the early hours, Rudy was convinced to go into the emergency room with a serious cough, fever (104), chills, and was cold to touch. The ER doctor diagnosed Rudy with a bad case of asthma and a possible upper respiratory infection.  After being discharged the next day, Rudy returned home. February 23rd Rudy was taken back into the ER with similar symptoms and admitted to a room immediately. The next 24 hours they ran dozens of tests, took countless vials of blood, and took numerous scans (MRI, CT Scans, X-Rays). The attending physician removed all anti-biotics and fluids from Rudy after a day of meds and attempting to locate the issue. Tuesday saw the physician then bring in Rudy's Oncologist to see if it could be his MDS. The physician was so convinced it was his MDS, nothing was being done to treat Rudy (no IV, no fluids, no answers). Rudy's health began to decline rapidly the next day. On Wednesday the 26th, an Infection Disease specialist was finally called in to assist what's going on. Meanwhile, our family was getting NO ANSWERS. Rudy developed Jaundice, lost his appetite, and was receiving NO TREATMENT. The Oncologist confirmed on two occasions that Rudy's hospitalization has NOTHING to do with his MDS, Leukemia, or any issues stemming from Cancer. Blood work and tests confirmed this. Mary, Debbie, Yvonne, and Rudy Jr. ALL voiced their opinions, assumptions, and concern over the lack of care he was not receiving. Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening saw the worst of it as Rudy was disorientated, weak, had rapid breathing, and still NO FLUIDS or monitoring performed. Rudy Jr. stayed with his father that night which ended up being Rudy Sr.'s last night with us. As the night progressed of no sleep, lack of fluids, no eating, restricted to ice chips, Rudy Sr. sadly took his last breath at 3:48am.

March 3rd, 2020
After a meeting with Rudy's Oncologist, they did confirm a test came back positive for Legionella Pneumonia as well as Sepsis (once again). Sepsis results are usually available immediately but the date for Rudy was the test was administered on February 23rd (second sting in ER) but the results did not return until the afternoon he died. Same thing with the Legionella Pneumonia, the results were too late. The worst part for the entire family that is almost impossible to accept is that THERE IS AN ANTI-BIOTIC available for Legionella.
