Every year I join 5th Squad in Ruck for Rugrats because I believe service changes lives. For 11 years Veterans, military families, businesses, and neighbors have come together to carry more than a pack. We carry hope. The toys donated at this event make up the largest annual gift to Children’s of Mississippi Hospital, and knowing those gifts bring a smile to a sick child keeps me lacing up my boots year after year.

Beyond the toys, Ruck for Rugrats supports a deeper promise: Veterans helping Veterans. Through the $250 Challenge, every mile I ruck becomes a chance to support 5th Squad’s ongoing programs—immediate financial help for Veterans in crisis, case management, community outreach, and the kind of gratitude and camaraderie that heals. When I fundraise, I am not only giving toys to kids, I am standing with fellow Veterans who need a hand, a voice, and a community that cares.

This work matters because it brings two kinds of healing at once. A child who receives a toy in the hospital feels seen and comforted. A Veteran who receives support from 5th Squad feels respected and supported. Together, our miles and donations turn compassion into action and remind our community what is possible when we choose to serve.
