Hi, my name is Angelique, and this beautiful girl is Ruby - my 2-year-old German Shepherd.

Ruby came into my life when she was just 8 weeks old. I still remember walking into the RSPCA in NSW and locking eyes with this little ball of fluff who would then become my best friend. Since then, we’ve shared everything; beach days, road trips, and quiet nights. She’s been my constant, my calm, and my joy through everything life has thrown my way recently.

But last night, everything changed in an instant.

Ruby, who’s usually bouncing around, didnt finish her food. Within hours, she was clearly in pain, something was terribly wrong. We rushed her to the emergency hospital (SASH), and after triage and X-rays, we were hit with a diagnosis I had never even heard of before: GDV (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus) which is a life threatening condition where her stomach twisted.

Time was everything. We had to act immediately or lose her.

Thanks to the incredible emergency team, Ruby made it through surgery and is now in the ICU being closely monitored. She's stable, but she’s not done yet.

As relieved as I am to still have her with me, the cost of saving her life has been overwhelming, far beyond what I was prepared for. The hospital bills are more than I could’ve imagined, and as someone who works on a commission basis, I’m also needing to take a few days away from work to stay by her side while she recovers.
