Ruby Hills Organics OLD GIRLS shed

Donation protected
Here at Ruby Hills Organics - it's a family affair.  Just a  simple, family farming to produce ethical, nutritious, Certified Organic eggs.  Our 4 children and ourselves (Nic & Amy) tend to the sheep and chickens on a daily basis.  We need a little help to keep things ticking along on our farm, read on to get a little bit of background...

To the best of our ability, we only offer humane, happy solutions to our farm.  We're Certified Organic and we take that very seriously. The stocking numbers that you've seen kicking up a storm in the "free range" press lately don't even come close to what we do.  We follow our Certified Organic Standard of roughly 7 square meters/hen in their safety paddock.  That 7 square meters/hen is refreshed every few days to let them forage for new bugs and to scratch and eat in the dirt and grass.  Our loyal Maremma guardian dogs patiently look after our girls by protecting them from preadators.

This is our newest recruit - Lenny.

Our hens have 24/7 access to our Certified Organic paddocks.  Every few days, Nic heads out in the dark before they are up and gently closes the door on their shed, hooks it up to the tractor, and pulls it to a fresh new ground.  The Maremmas (Queenie, Roger, and the latest little fella, Lenny) come along with the shed, waters, feeders and fencing and they get to start the day fresh.

We hand pack our eggs twice a week inspecting every single egg and carefully putting them in cartons and boxes to lovingly send off to you and your family.

As some of you know, we have bought our new farm (now 2 years ago!), have worked hard to continue our Organic Certification, and now Nic is even busier building our family a home on the farm - as it was bare land to start with.  Our tractor has broken down this year, and has put an additional strain on the system, we've gone okay and have bought an old second hand one to pull the houses with in the meantime, but there are financial pressures to fix the old one with a loader to move pallets and the feed.

We can see a glitch in the program, and because of your strong demand for ethical, nutritious eggs, we need to build another hen house to enable us to keep our hens a bit longer.  You see, in nearly all egg farms, Hens are only allowed to have one laying season before they are trucked and processed.  Here at Ruby Hills, we keep them at least 2 seasons before selling them off to friends and neighbours for backyard hens.  With tight budgets while we build our home, and rising feed costs, we need your help to fund a new hen house so that we can keep up with our ethical treatment of our girls, and keep them for multiple lays.

We believe in doing it so much that we are building our new hen house, modelling it after the ones we already have and using local contractors and engineers here in South Gippsland. We will need an additional fluffly white Maremma to go with the girls, and the funding will also help with feeders, waterers, fencing, and if we go beyond our goal, we will get our old tractor fixed too!
This is just our hand up to help us - we are struggling to make it all happen this year, and we need your help.
We'd love to keep you up to date on how it progresses via facebook: facebook.com/rubyhillsorganics

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us keep our small business producing the ethical produce that we love.
