Jen and Ryan Ruby own a home in Pennsylvania that was managed by a property management company.
In the winter of 2017/2018, the property management company failed to properly winterize the home, despite Ryan reaching out to them several times to do so. The PM company left it vacant and never checked on the home. Snow collected on the roof and the water pipes froze. This caused tens of thousands of dollars in damages to the roof and interior of the home, and the mold that developed has made the home unlivable.
During this time, Jen and Ryan lived and worked in Georgia. The PM company never contacted the Rubys about the status of their home, and they were only made aware of the situation by an incredibly high water bill. The city has been uncaring and uncooperative to help alleviate the now $25,000 water bill.
The home insurance company offered to pay less than $10,000 to cover the damages to the home, despite a contractor working with the family to get the absolutely lowest repair bill of more than $56,000.
The family is taking legal action against both the insurance company and property management company. At this time, Jen lives in SC, Ryan is living in MD for work, so the family is financially strained maintinaing two households, plus a mortgage on the home in PA. On top of that, they are also paying legal fees to try to resolve the immense burden brought on by the negligence of the PM company and the dishonest practices of the insurance company.
We created this on behalf of the Rubys because Jen and Ryan are the kindest, most giving people that are so modest, they’d never ask for the help - despite being completely deserving.
Please help us help them alleviate this financial burden, because we’re not holding our breath that the insurance company or the property management company will do the right thing.
Below are the costs/estimates of what your donations can help cover. Please keep in mind, the home repair estimate is for a bare bones repair that would just get the home in livable condition again.
Water Bill: $24, 564.19
Home Repair Estimate: $56,958.16
+ Legal Fees
