On March 11, 2024, the Burke family's world was turned upside down when my wee brother Ruairí was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (T-ALL). Ruairí’s treatment required him to be admitted as an inpatient to Belfast City Hospital for initially 3 months, later extended to at least 4 months.

During this challenging time, our family was incredibly fortunate to be offered a home away from home at Amy’s House. This remarkable facility provides free accommodation for families with children undergoing cancer treatment. It has been an absolute lifeline for us.

Amy’s House not only keeps Mammy and Daddy just 5 minutes away from Ruairí, saving them a 3-hour round trip every day, but it also allows us to manage household chores like laundry and prepare meals tailored to Ruairí's needs. On weekends when Ruairí is permitted to leave the ward for a few hours, Amy’s House provides a safe and clean environment where we can spend precious time together as a family. Its value is truly immeasurable.

The Burke family will be forever grateful for the sanctuary that Amy’s House has provided. To express our gratitude, and in an effort to fundraise I have enrolled in the Hyrox Dublin event.

Previously participating as part of a doubles pair, this year I will be taking on the challenge solo to raise funds for Young Lives vs Cancer, the organization behind Amy’s House. Any donation, no matter how small or large, would be immensely appreciated.

What’s Hyrox?

Hyrox is a fitness competition featuring 8 1km runs, each followed by different functional exercises like rowing, sled pushes, and burpee broad jumps. Participants aim to complete the course as fast as they can, testing both their running endurance and strength.
