Luke Schemm Legacy Scholarship

“A beautiful gift from God was taken away from Lisa and I last night. Luke Schemm suffered trauma to the brain, causing it to swell and shut off blood flow to the brain. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and reaching out to us. Please continue to reach out to us, it is going to be a very difficult time for us, and we will only be able to make it thru with the help of God, family, friends, and community.” –David Schemm, father to Luke

On Tuesday, November 3rd, Wallace County High School senior Luke Schemm was doing what he loved most; playing running back and linebacker with his Wildcat team in the season’s first playoff game. After scoring his fourth touchdown and the 2-point conversion, #4 jogged to the team huddle on the sideline, and collapsed into his coach’s arms.  Twenty hours later, Luke was taken off of life support and passed away of a traumatic brain injury.

Media and social media has since spread the word of what the Wallace County community already knew of this exemplary young man. A superb scholar and athlete, he was highly involved in every aspect in his high school of 56 students including the lead role in the school play, was President of his 4-H Club and a loving mentor in Big Brothers, Big Sisters, as well as a friend to all in his life. He is mourned by his parents David and Lisa Schemm, who farm in this Northwest Kansas community, and older brother Clay, a sophomore at Kansas State University, as well as many relatives, classmates, teachers and friends.

In order to honor Luke and inspire others to “Live the Legacy,” a memorial fund has been established to provide scholarships to deserving students. The proceeds from this GoFundMe account will be channeled into the Luke Schemm Memorial Fund already established in Sharon Springs. The family and friends of Luke invite you to contribute to this fund to provide a lasting memorial to Luke and to inspire other students to follow his example in academics, athletics, community involvement and friendships.

“…I have so many thoughts going thru my head, but everyone know this: I, Lisa Coston Schemm, and Clay Schemm, will need help to get thru this, we all will. All of us will become stronger as time goes by, but NOT because we forget about Luke Schemm, but because we try to live by the example he has now set for us.” – David Schemm
