Teach on the Beach (Ghana)

Hallo, mein Name ist Greta Jackisch und wir sammeln Spenden für die NGO Teach on the Beach in Ghana.

Teach on the Beach ist eine Organisation in Busua, in der Western Region in Ghana. Busua ist ein Fischerdorf gelegen am Meer mit ca. 5000 Einwohner*innen. Viele Familien sind auf den Verdienst aus Fischertätigkeiten angewiesen, wo Kinder schon ab dem jüngsten Alter mithelfen müssen.

Seit vielen Jahren setzt sich Teach on the Beach für die Bedürfnisse der Kinder in der Community ein. Täglich kommen 100 Kinder zu einem „after school program“ zusammen, dort werden gemeinsam Hausaufgaben erledigt, Spiele gespielt, Workshops zu wichtigen Themen erarbeitet, und eine Menge mehr. Neben dem Nachmittags Angebot, wird Montag bis Freitag ein News Hour Programm angeboten. Dort kommen die älteren Schüler*innen zusammen, und schauen mit den Mitarbeitenden die Nachrichten aus aller Welt mit anschließender Diskussion. Viele Familien können sich die Schulbildung ihrer Kinder nicht leisten, oft gibt es nicht genügend Geld für Schulmaterialien und Schuluniform. Teach on the Beach versuchst diese Familien zu unterstützen und stellt Schulbücher, Stifte, Rucksäcke, Schuluniformen, .. zur Verfügung.

Das von Teach on the Beach betriebene Bildungszentrum ist gemietet, sodass sie jedes Jahr hohe Mieten zahlen müssen und wegen verspäteter Zahlung mit der Räumung gedroht werden. Aufgrund der Art ihrer Arbeit benötigt Teach on the Beach einen festen Ort und einen sicheren Hafen, in dem sich die Kinder entfalten können. Im Jahr 2021 haben sie ihr eigenes Land in der Community gekauft. Letztes Jahr hat der Bau eines nachhaltigen Klassenzimmers gestartet, doch nun sind die finanziellen Mittel ausgegangen und der Weiterbau ist stillgelegt. Mit Hilfe eines Architektur-Wettbewerbs konnten neue Pläne ausgearbeiteten werden für den Bau eines Hauses für die Mitarbeitenden und für ein Community Center damit gewährleistet werden kann, dass die wichtige Arbeit von Teach on the Beach fortgeführt wird.

Hello, my name is Greta Jackisch and we are collecting donations for the NGO Teach on the Beach in Ghana.

Teach on the Beach is an organization in Busua, in the Western Region of Ghana. Busua is a fishing village by the sea with about 5000 inhabitants. Many families depend on the income from fishing activities, where children have to help from the youngest age.

For many years, Teach on the Beach has been working to meet the needs of the children in the community. Every day, 100 children come together for an "after school program", where they do homework together, play games, work on important topics, and a lot more. In addition to the after school program, a News Hour program is offered Monday through Friday. This is where the older students come together and watch the news from around the world with the staff, followed by a discussion.

Many families cannot afford to send their children to school, often there is not enough money for school supplies and uniforms. Teach on the Beach tries to support these families and provides school books, pencils, backpacks, school uniforms, ...

The education center operated by Teach on the Beach is rented, so they have to pay high rents every month and are threatened with eviction for late payment. Due to the nature of their work, Teach on the Beach needs a permanent location and a safe haven where the children can flourish. In 2021, they purchased their own land in the community. Last year, construction of a sustainable classroom started, but now funding has run out and the construction is at a standstill. With the help of an architectural competition, new plans have been drawn up to build a house for the staff and a community center to ensure that the important work of Teach on the Beach continues.
