Brie's Road to Recovery

Brie is our #recoverychampion

Sunday, July 26th started out as a gorgeous and exciting—like an adventure awaits—kind of day for Brie as she set off for a hike & swim at High Falls. While exploring, our wonder seeker misjudged her footing, falling 20 feet over the edge. Brie had to be rescued in the water and then airlifted to the Ottawa Hospital trauma center. She sustained severe injuries to her spinal cord and needed emergency surgery to repair the fracture on her L1. Brie woke up from surgery still unable to move her legs and suffering from severe nausea and double vision. The doctors performed a second surgery for her right eye to repair her fractured optical floor with a titanium plate (BIONIC WOMAN) and completed a procedure for her inner ears to help with her vertigo and nausea.
It’s now been a few weeks and Brie continues to carry herself in true Brie style: making jokes, making friends, and making hospital garb fashionable. She is recovering at a remarkable rate, impressing her doctors as she regains feeling and movement in her legs. Brie is just getting started, though! Now with her vision and vertigo under control, she has been admitted into a world-class spinal rehab program where she will learn to walk again. Brie is still currently at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, but hopefully will be moving into the rehabilitation center Monday. This is where Brie’s determination and perseverance will work together to help her regain her independence.

Right now, Brie needs YOUR help! There are substantial costs that insurance will not cover and we want to make sure she can focus on her health rather than financial stress.

The funds will be used to cover:

- extended hospital/rehabilitation costs not covered by healthcare and insurance

- Renovations equipment and supplies for independent living when she returns home

- personal assistance when she returns home

Beneficiary:

Brie's sister Kara Wright is now by her side at the rehab center. In order for Brie to focus 100% on her recovery, she has signed all her financial rights over to Kara. She has been taking care of the finance side so Brie can rest and work towards recovery in peace.  It is Kara who will be making sure all your donations make Brie's recovery as easy as possible.

A message from Brie's mother:

As Brie’s mom... I would like to thank all the people who have reached out in support, as well as her amazing care teams at the Ottawa Civic Hospital & Rehab facility. Community is very important to my kind-hearted Brie. She has maintained connections to like-minded, like-spirited people all around the world through school, travels, sports, Rotary, wardrobe & costuming, and creative expression. She is strong and resilient. But she needs help now to face the challenge before her, with grace and dignity. Any help that her broad community of support could offer would be gratefully appreciated. ~ Frances

Brie would love to thank you for being on her team and supporting her recovery by sending you a little postcard of appreciation. Please send your address to [email redacted].
