My name is Jonna Bo Lammers, I am a Dutch illustrator that works frequently with feminist topics such as sexual violence, sexism, and sex positive topics. Currently I’m doing a masters at Konstfack in Stockholm, visual communication and for my graduation project I’m planning to paint big mural (38mx15m) about sexual assault.

This mural will be the start of a counter-visual attack on harmful sexual assault imagery and make survivors of sexual assault feel seen.

HOW IT STARTED

In December of 2023 I was riding the metro and I suddenly saw that the man sitting right across from me started jerking off – to me. I hastily left the metro in a panic, and tried to get on with my day. I found it hard to get on the metro again the next day. At the time I didn’t see this as an assault. Why?

I think the way it is visualised in mainstream media contributed to this idea. My mural is a first step against this commercial line of thinking.

MY RESEARCH

I have found that generally the way sexual assault is depicted in mainstream media is from the perspective of the perpetrator. It depicts the victim of the assault in a defensive stance, which suggests a problematic expectation of the victim having an active role in preventing or stopping the violence. I argue that this narrative must change. I think that more nuance is needed in visual representation. For example illustration, they can depict the inner world of a survivor—something that current media lacks. My goal is to make the complexity of sexual violence more visible through visual storytelling.

THE MURAL

This mural can jumpstart my countervisual attack on this repetitive sexual assault imagery. Most importantly, I want to make survivors of sexual assault feel seen. I want to start a bigger conversation about the way we see sexual violence and the way it is visualised. And, I want to create awareness for the suppressed consequences these images have and change them.

The mural will be part of the spring exhibition of Konstfack, a 38mx15m wall visible from Konstfack in Stockholm.
