Help Me Build Wells in Africa
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Rachel Largent, and I am a freshman at Flower Mound High School in Flower Mound, Texas. I am working on a project for my Humanities class in school named Genius Hour. For this project, I have been asked to pick a subject that I am passionate about, research it, and create a product that incorporates it .
For my project, I am teaming up with a Christian organization called Poetice International to raise money for clean water wells.
http://poetice.org
Poetice's primary function is to help the impoverish people in countries such as Lesotho, South Africa, Zambia, Swaziland, and Mozambique. I am partnering with Poetice to build clean water wells in Zambia and Mozambique.
Water wells cost $8,500 and will sustain at least 700 people with clean water, but it may effect hundreds more. When Poetice builds a well, they build it next to a church. This builds trust between the people and the Christian community. Besides the religious aspect of it, building a well will give a family member a way back into education. When the village goes into a drought, or runs out of water, a child in the family will have to quit school, and spend their days walking to and from a water source all day long. It is often 20-30 minutes round trip. Building a well can help the children go back to school and start a new life for themselves.
For my project, I created a fundraiser to raise the necessary money for the wells. The fundraiser consists of me asking local businesses to donate prizes for a drawing.
I met with around 100 businesses and eleven provided gift cards or goods for me to use as prizes in the drawing. I am selling tickets and all proceeds will go toward clean water wells in Africa.
My goal is to sell enough tickets and/or collect enough donations to build two wells in Africa.
I'm selling tickets for the drawing in Flower Mound at Walgreen's on FM 2499 and FM 3040 on April 13, 15, 16, 18, 20, 22, 23, 25. Weekdays - 4:30 - 6:30 Saturdays- 9:00 - 4:00.
If you're not able to make it to Flower Mound Texas, donations are greatly appreicated.
