This is a courageous man's battle story as he fights against the evil Mesothelioma.
After being diagnosed with pneumonia in October 2019 and symptoms not lifting, Mike Ennis began a 2-month journey of antibiotics, PET scans, x-rays, and CT scans. Results concluded there was a pleural effusion in the right lung. It was determined that Mike needed to have the fluid that developed in his right lung removed due to its prevention from the lung fully expanding. Draining the fluid was thought to provide instant relief and allow the lung to fully expand to capacity; Unfortunately that was not the case. The follow-up x-ray just a few days later showed to still have fluid.
They also revealed that Mike had a condition known as ‘trapped lung’. This meant that he needed to undergo surgery immediately not only to remove the fluid again, but to ‘peel’ off the portions of the right lung that acted as an orange peel, preventing the lung from expanding. On December 27th, 2019, 4 hours into Mike’s operation, the surgeon visited the lobby to inform Mike’s wife that there was a mass adhering the lung to the lining, and it appeared to be cancerous. Three excruciating weeks into recovery from an unsuccessful lung surgery, it was discovered that the mass was Stage 2 Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma.
In January 2020, the Thorasic team of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN suggested that Mike begin chemotherapy in an effort to reduce the size of the mass to make it surgically removable. Essentially, if the mass is not removed, things look grim. Mike has undergone 2 Chemo treatments and will be re-assessing his treatment plan Mid-March via follow up scans. As long as it appears small enough to operate, he will return to the Mayo in late March to meet with a surgeon.
Family and close friends have been an immense help to Mike and Jen over the past months, but the expenses are only beginning to accumulate. Prescriptions, Hotel stays, Hospital bills, treatments not entirely covered by insurance are just a few of the costs being incurred.
Mike and Jen have been married for just 3 short years, and are happy fur baby parents of 2 house panthers. Mike enjoys reading comics, playing video games, and bargain hunting for good deals. He and Jen need our support to get Mike back to the normal life they knew only a few months ago. If you are able to give, every little bit helps and will be put to careful use.
