From Gaza: Anees, 19 — Fighting for His Family’s Survival with Dignity
My name is Anees, I’m 19 years old from Khan Younis, Gaza.
I lost my older brother in an airstrike. My other brother has been imprisoned for 550 days. That left me — still a teenager — as the sole provider and protector for my sick father, my mother, and my little sister Rasha.
Our home and small family business were destroyed. We have been displaced more than 10 times. Today, we live in a tent without safety, comfort, or dignity.
One day, I walked 13 kilometers under Gaza’s scorching sun just to get a single bag of flour. I was beaten and threatened by armed gangs, but I held onto that bag — because it wasn’t just food; it was our dignity.
I don’t ask for pity. I ask for dignity.
