Approximately 680,000 children are abused or neglected EACH YEAR. These children are often separated from their siblings and become entangled in a complex and traumatizing system of foster homes, courts, and child welfare agencies.
These vulnerable children need and deserve a trained advocate who knows how to maneuver through the complicated process and can actively direct the child’s case toward a good and positive outcome. Unfortunately, the system is overburdened and underfunded and lacks the resources to provide all children with the effective advocacy they need.
The children pay the price – sometimes with their very lives.
These children have already been victims of violence by their own family members; they do not deserve to become a victim of our broken system.
For 20 years, Texas Loves Children, Inc. has worked to protect abused children in Texas by ensuring that advocates for these children are trained and effective, and that judges have access to resources to enhance their decision-making in these cases. TLC’s unique program has won several national and regional awards, including the 2014 Paul Chapman National Justice Award, given by the Foundation for Improvement of Justice, and the 2010 Award for Excellence in Social Innovation. This award-winning program has helped ensure that decisions made are the best possible for the child’s future. TLC is expanding nationally as the Child Protection Connection to serve even more children.
I recently joined the board of this great organization and look forward to working with them to help these abused children. We are pushing harder than ever to raise funds as we work tirelessly to ensure better advocacy for the abused children of Texas and a growing number of other states.
