Dear Families and Friends of Royal Oaks,
This project began when a 2nd grade Social Studies Unit raised questions about reducing air pollution. Passion regarding this topic in classroom discussions was genuine and mature for seven year olds. Enthusiam about solving environmental issues only continued as we surveyed other grade levels at Royal Oaks. We found that numerous Science and Social Studies units in our curriculum challenge this generation of learners to look at the future with a similar, forward- thinking mentality. Therefore, we have decided as a group of future problem solvers that it is time for the Royal Oaks Rockets to collectively act upon one of our best solutions yet!
We want to reduce air pollution by purchasing an array of solar panels that will be located on our school grounds. Our hope is to install a 5.13kw array of panels that will be pole- mounted on our south-facing field, making it visible and accessible to all, for a variety of educational opportunities. Additionally, we will install a centrally located information kiosk inside of the building's learning center. The kiosk will show and explain how the panels function, how they help the environment, and dispaly energy savings on a real- time monitor. After measuring watts and looking at past electric records, we concluded that the 18 panel system will be large enough to offset the energy use of every computer within our entire school- a total of 84 desktops and 334 laptops, and some of our lighting as well!
We hope to have the funds raised by the end of the 2017 school year. Installation would take place in the summer of 2017. An unveiling of the completed project to students and staff would take place at the beginning of the 2017/2018 school year.
Remember, small donations add up. We would be thrilled to see your support on any level. All businesses that wish to support the project will be listed on our sponsors wall located on a fence surrounding the panel system. A secondary fund has also been set up where checks can be made out directly to the school district.
Please help us to become the first elementary school in our city to harness the power of solar energy!
Completion of this project, with the help of your contributions, reduces our carbon footprint, cuts back one public school's electricity cost, and educates countless students for several years to come.
With gratitude,
Royal Oaks Staff and Students
