Life. Life changes in an instant.

On 1.18.23 our lives changed forever when my 20 year old Godson, Royal Howard, was found unresponsive at home in the Bay Area by his Mom, my best friend of 25 years, Brandy Rietz. He was rushed to the hospital and it was determined that he had suffered from an accidental drug overdose. He’s currently sedated, on a ventilator, a feeding tube and has a tracheostomy to keep him alive while his body heals. Neurologists are unsure of what will happen at this point, all we can do is wait.

Meanwhile, our lives are now deeply affected by the unknown. Royal has multiple siblings including Brandys other children who are 14 and 11. She’s now forced to deal with being a single Mom for the two littles, while also managing the medical care Royal constantly requires.

Let me tell you about this kid Royal though.
Royal was due mid-August 2002, and I had a trip planned to come from So. Cal for 8.29, with the intention that he’d be home for a few weeks and I could have he and Brandy all to myself for a few days. Late in her pregnancy, I would tease her about how he would wait for me to be in the Bay to be born and sure enough…he was born on 8.29!! (I don’t remember Brandy being excited about that part but I was amused!!)

Walking into the hospital room a few hours after his birth, I remember the nurse came over and said “he’s the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen”…and boy was she right. (That pic of us at 4 days old was taken on a film camera…we had no idea he was throwing up the W until we printed it! He was a real Bay Area Boy from jump!)
A year later I moved back to the Bay Area and got to be part of his life everyday as we lived together with his Grandpa and our other bestie Coco and her kids.

As Royal grew he was sweet and inquisitive and hilarious…and being bi-racial, he grew the most beautiful curly blonde hair and everywhere he went people would say “I love your hair!” Soon, Royal started telling everyone he saw, “I love your hair”…even to bald people!

The first time we gave Royal a drink of Sprite (probably around 3 years old) he said loudly and confidently, “MY NOSE FEELS SPARKLY”…and it made perfect sense.

As he got older and his siblings came along he was a great big brother…and sometimes he was just a typical brother (you read into that what you want)!

As Royal grew, he had his share of ups and downs, he suffered some great losses and lives his life with ADHD that makes his (and his Mama’s) life hard at times.

He plays the tough guy but at the end of the day, Royal wanted to love and be loved.
He would get mad at me when I gave him a hard time about whatever the topic was of the moment, but then he’d do things like call me repeatedly just to tell me about a new job or a car he bought. He was proud of himself and I was proud of him.

I have a lot of kids in my life. Hell…most of those kids are adults now…but Royal…Royal is one of two kids that I helped raise. He’s one of my babies.

I fully believe that Royal is strong (and stubborn) enough to come back to us fully. I know it. But this road is gonna be long.

Royal has a lot of friends and family
rooting for him. His Dad and other siblings, his Grandpa who adores him…there are TOO many people that love him!!

Brandy and his siblings are going to NEED support so I’m asking you to PLEASE give what you can and then give a little more.

 Every dollar counts.

Please SHARE this with your own network and more than anything, please send your prayers, your love, your light, whatever energy you have, to my loved ones…to my best friend and to my baby.

We need it right now…today, tomorrow and in the future.

Peace and love to you all.
