This was our dog this morning before we had to euthanize her:
Last week we took in a perfectly healthy dog for a routine checkup at our vet here in Austin. We ended up putting down that same dog today after she lost all ability to walk and function due to severe and acute liver failure...directly following receiving the ProHeart12 heartworm vaccination during that appointment.
After receiving that vaccination, Rowling went from a lively and healthy dog to vomiting and urinating nonstop. She lost all appetite and became very lethargic. When these symptoms persisted for 12+ hours, we rushed her to the emergency vet and had her put on fluids and antibiotics, and underwent an ultrasound. The ultrasound went smoothly, indicating no cancer of the liver and no blockages -- Rowling was released to us after an overnight stay with the hopes that we could get her to eat.
Following being released from the Emergency Vet, Rowling steadily declined. She continued to vomit and urinate nonstop and started to lost motor function in her back legs. She was rushed back to the EV and put back on fluids and put through another round of tests. This round of bloodwork suggested complete liver failure and we were called at 2 am that night to be informed that she was no longer able to walk and was not responsive. We took her home from the EV and had her euthanized 10 hours later via a house-call veterinarian.
I want to warn anyone who vaccinates their dog for heartworms against the vaccination ProHeart 12 — the vets will not admit it, but I will reiterate that we have just had to bury a previously perfectly healthy dog. We are devastated.
The funds from this campaign will help us pay off the credit cards that we charged for the vet bills. Below are the totals charged for the procedures and vet visits since December 3, 2020.
The first vet bill for the "routine check-up" on 12/3/20: $572.82
First ER visit on 12/5/20: $2215.58
Second ER visit on 12/7/20: $1817.63
Euthanasia on 12/8/20: $400
