Rowdy is my 16-year-old child, and our world changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with Stargardt Disease—a rare genetic retinal disorder that causes juveniles to lose their central vision at a rapid pace. Our journey began in April 2025 when Rowdy started experiencing vision blackouts and difficulty seeing at school. After an initial doctor’s visit, we learned there was a spot on his retina that needed to be monitored. Despite trying different corrections, his vision could not be improved. By October, his vision had declined further, and specialized testing revealed missing parts of his retina, color blindness, and a rapid decrease in his vision to 20/60. The next day, a retinal specialist confirmed a genetic abnormality, and genetic testing was done. Just a few weeks later, his vision had dropped to 20/80, and we received the official diagnosis: Stargardt Disease, caused by a mutation in his ABCA4 gene. There is currently no cure or treatment, and we are now focused on helping Rowdy adapt to this new reality.
The funds raised will go directly toward Rowdy’s medical expenses, travel and lodging for appointments at Duke University, essential adaptive tools like a seeing eye dog and a cane, special polarized glasses, and classes to help him learn how to operate new technology for vision loss and Braille. As a single mother, the financial, mental, and physical challenges are overwhelming, but Rowdy remains in good spirits despite his vision decreasing by the day. Our first appointment at Duke University is on December 1st, and I will keep everyone updated as we learn more.
As always, prayers are what we need the most as we travel back and forth for further testing and any possible treatments. If you are able to help in any way, we would be deeply grateful for your support during this difficult transition. Your prayers and kind words mean the world to us and will help keep our spirits up as Rowdy faces the loss of one of the most precious senses there is. Thank you for being part of our journey and for lifting us up with your love and support.
