This is our neighbor Kara Reihs. She was walking home from work at 5:30 am on May 20th and was hit and run over in the cross walk at the roundabout on Spencer and Vierling in Shakopee. As she lay face down on the pavement unable to move her left side, she did locate her phone in her backpack and called 911. A witness stopped and held her head as they waited for the ambulance and police arrived. Another person stopped and directed traffic to keep them safe. She was transported to St. Francis to stabilize her body then Kara was air lifted to HCMC with multiple fractures and wounds: A collapsed lung, broken pelvis, broken femur, cracked ribs, cracks in sternum and vertebrae, broken bone in foot and elbow, she also sustained many bruises and scrapes. She had surgery on 5/20 to put pins and plates in her pelvis to repair it. She also had a rod put in her femur to repair that break. She had about 100 stitches used during the 4.5 hour surgery. Her orthopedic surgeon said in his 35 years of surgery, he has never seen a hip joint with this much damage and a hip replacement will probably be required. Kara had a tube inserted in her lung cavity for a week to release any fluid and air and allow the lung to recover. She was in intensive care for 2 days at HCMC and watched very closely by many doctors and nurses. On 5/22 they put a plate in Kara's right elbow to repair a break. On 5/23 they put a cast on her left foot to secure the break in her foot.
Thankfully Kara's body is starting to heal, but she is still in a lot of pain and the healing process is going to take a long time. Kara was release from HCMC last weekend to a physical therapy rehab facility where she can continue to heal and build up strength. She is restricted from putting any weight on her leg to allow healing. At this time a wheelchair is her only way of getting around.
We are grateful for the good samaritans that stopped and sat with Kara until help arrived. We are also grateful for all the prayers that she has received for her recovery.
We are asking for your help to raise funds to help with medical and personal expenses. Kara will be out from work for an unknown amount of time. Thank you for all your prayers and considerations.
