PLEASE HELP A YOUNG KASHMIRI GIRL DIAGNOSED WITH LEUKEMIA
I am fundraising for Rounak Jan, a 14-year-old Kashmiri girl from Ganderbal (a village on the outskirts of Srinagar), who has recently been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells.
I live in Canada but often go back home to Kashmir. Rounak’s father is a member of my family's household in Kashmir and an employee of my father's business. Fayaza Kaka has been with our family for over ten years. He is the sole earner of his household and works usually as a Sumo Driver. However, given the conditions in Kashmir due to the Article 370 abrogation lockdown and now the coronavirus lockdown, he has not found much work since August 2019.
The devastating news of Rounak's diagnosis was accompanied by further financial burdens. The healthcare system in Kashmiri is completely privatized and all costs (diagnosis, testing, treatment, medication and more) fall on the family. I have permission from the family to share a few photos here to outline the thousands of rupees required each day for testing and treatment.
Rounak Jan is currently staying at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) and is fighting to get better in the midst of COVID19 turmoil. It is an incredibly stressful and difficult time for her and her family. Her family should not have to worry about money during a time like this.
All funds from this campaign will be transferred to Magray Fayaz, Rounak Jan's father, to pay for medical bills, medication and all related expenses as well as the family's everyday costs of living for the foreseeable future. As this is an ongoing and urgent situation, I am hoping we can get these funds to the Magray family within a month. I will make proof of this transfer available to all the donors once it is complete and am always available for suggestions to make this process as transparent as possible.
