My name is Lisa Cohen, and I am the President of the Rotary Club of Washington DC. As an advocate for foster youth, I am reaching out to you today to share a cause that is very close to my heart.

Having grown up in the foster care system myself, I understand the challenges that these young individuals face. While in foster care, I moved a total of 13 times. While I can’t recall all of the moves, the ones I do remember left a lasting impact on me. Each time, my belongings were stuffed into garbage bags which was humiliating. I never want any other child to endure that feeling.

Sadly, there are currently over 3,000 foster youth in the DMV and it is our mission to provide them with a sense of dignity, and belonging. To achieve this, we aim to gift these young individuals with their own luggage which we hope to alleviate some of the stress and uncertainty that comes with constantly moving.

Additionally, another important aspect of a foster youth's life - their birthdays. Throughout my 19 years in the system, I never had a birthday party. In fact, there were instances where it was completely forgotten or disregarded by those I lived with. Unfortunately,

I have initiated the Rotary Championship Fight for Youth during my presidency. Our aim to bring awareness to the challenges faced by foster youth and support them in meaningful ways. As part of our efforts, we will be hosting our first inaugural Championship Fight for Youth Golf Tournament.

This golf tournament serves as a fundraising event to support our cause. The funds raised will go towards providing luggage for foster youth and organizing memorable birthday celebrations for 50 young individuals in our local area. Our goal is to make these celebrations truly unforgettable for these deserving youth, and the gift of luggage will serve as a practical item for their future journeys.
