Rory’s Cochlear Implant

For those of you who have been following Rory’s journey since he was born in January, we have reached the next hurdle (and it’s a big one, more like a mountain) to overcome. We have recently had amazing news following a follow up MRI/ IAM scan that Rory is a suitable candidate for a Cochlear Implant which would ultimately give him the ability to hear. He needs it pretty fast as the best outcome can only be achieved if he has the implant very soon so that the brain develops using it. Great Ormond Street have had an operating slot become available on 22nd August (less than two weeks).

The NHS will not give Rory this opportunity because they only cover bilateral profound deafness and there is also a 3-4 year waitlist. Our private medical insurance will not cover this as the small print states that they will not cover any abnormality if it is found to be congenital (happened during pregnancy).

We never wanted to reach this point, creating a GoFundMe page, but having spent tens of thousands so far and already putting in everything we can towards the operation and the first 12 months of rehabilitation & therapy, we are still £60,000 short of the £71,000 operation. A lot of people have offered to help with the costs and many have asked if we have a GoFundMe page. If we were to exceed our target for the operation cost, any additional funding would go towards his continued speech and language therapy, specialist assistance in his school as well as the programming of the device itself. We really appreciate any support and hopefully together we can get Rory his Cochlear Implant and the best chance of hearing for the rest of his life. Thank you
