ROOT & BRANCH FORUM for dignity and inclusivity in the Catholic Church
THE Catholic Church runs one quarter of the world's schools, hospitals, clinics, refuges, hostels and places of safety. It is a mighty force for good and for social action, most especially amongst the poor, the threatened, and the dispossessed.
It has, however, allowed itself to become trapped in its own power structures. We hold that it must address and restitute its unjust behaviours towards women, LGBTQ+ people, marginalised peoples and victims of abuse, and reject its own abuses of power.
We held our own grassroots Root & Branch inclusive lay-led Synod in Bristol, with your help, in September 2021. Our website & videos recorded 5,000 hits in the first week alone.
Professor Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland, Canon Lawyer and Chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin, who has pledged to spend her retirement challenging the Church, was our key speaker. To watch her, and 40 other amazing international speakers, please click here , or go to our website: www.rootandbranchsynod.org .
Now we are growing the call for reform with you, our wonderful Root & Branchers, and networking across the world to live the sort of Church we want to see. We fully endorse Pope Francis's call for a Synodal Church, where "every voice will be heard" culminating in Rome in 2023.
How your donation is used:
Everything we do - our emails, mail-outs, Twitter, Facebook and social media, planning, letter-writing, inviting speakers, organising programmes, Zooms and our inclusive Synod- the whole shebang of keeping the R&B show on the road - is done by our small group of volunteers, working from home.
We have to spend money to reach you, however, on the things we can’t do ourselves - techie stuff, website, recordings, video editing, online and real infrastructures - so those costs have to be found. Your support enables all these as we journey together towards Rome in 2023.
It’s you who've enabled us to come this far - please join us on the road ahead!
Our own commitment:
· Minimum monthly admin costs £2,250 given pro bono
· Admin costs already contributed to ROOT & BRANCH pro bono to date: £25,250
About the organiser: Pam Perry
Pamela, wife, mother and grandmother, is a former Cafod key volunteer. As Administrator of London Jubilee she was on the Boards of the Jubilee Debt campaign and Make Poverty History and organised World Debt Day for Guildford. She has written about and worked with refugees.
Pamela longs for sacramental ministry to be opened to all who have a priestly vocation and are deemed worthy, irrespective of gender or marital status. She believes now is the time for Catholics on the ground to call for the transformation of the unaccountable, hierarchical Catholic Church into a humbler, democratic institution, in tune with the simple teachings of Jesus and the loving power of the Holy Spirit.
