"Ohana" is a Hawaiian word meaning family. It encompasses not just blood relatives, but also friends, neighbors, and anyone else considered part of a person's close-knit circle.
Our sister and brother in law are raising incredible adult twin sons, both of whom are autistic. As they continue to grow into adulthood, their greatest dream is to provide them with a permanent, safe, and peaceful home — one where they can be surrounded by nature, have their own space, and live with dignity, stability, and support.
Unfortunately, as their sons have transitioned into adulthood, their behavior has become increasingly unpredictable, often resembling a “roller coaster” of emotions and aggression. The twins experience intense sensory overload and emotional distress, which has resulted in violent outbursts that are becoming more frequent and severe, despite medication management and physician care. These unpredictable behaviors have made the need for a change in their current living situation dire — for both themselves as caretakers and for Carson & Shawn.
The State of Ohio has minimal resources for Adults with profound Autism. Carson & Shawn aged out of "school" almost two years ago and the effects of losing that routine have been detrimental, not only to Carson & Shawn, but to Julie and Greg's health as well. While attempting to find resources they have reached out to the city of Kettering to inquire about converting an existing garage into a living space and were denied. We have reached out to other avenues and the response is always the same, nothing can be done because of their behaviors. Unfortunately, the behaviors can not change unless something is done!
Our goal is to purchase a suitable home (for Julie and Greg) with land to build their own tiny homes(for Shawn and Carson)— that would allow them their own independent living space. This property will allow Julie & Greg to focus on the boys as individuals and provide the security, routine, and calm environment their sons need to thrive.
As parents, their greatest fear is what will happen to them when they are no longer here to care for them. Our goal is to give them peace of mind that Carson & Shawn will be provided for to the best of our ability when that time comes.
We’re asking for help from our community and beyond. Every donation brings us closer to this life-changing goal. If you can't donate, sharing this campaign means the world to us.
Thank you for reading, caring, and supporting our journey!
