Rookie's Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Rookie is a goofy, loving 8 years young yellow labrador. A yellow lab was on every birthday and Christmas wish list of mine for as long as I can remember. My family finally caved when I graduated from college in 2009 and gifted me this little nugget.

Rookie has been my close companion ever since. Anyone who knows me well knows that a Clifford sized yellow lab is never too far behind me. We're a packaged deal :)

Unfortunately on May 2, 2017, Rookie was diagnoised with a very aggressive canine cancer, osteosarcoma (or bone cancer) in his right hind leg. The only way to ensure removal of the cancer sight and relieve him of the pain is to amputate the affected leg. The intensity of this treatment hit me hard, but after further reseach this is the most common form of treatment for osteosarcoma and dogs are known to recover very quickly. They adjust to life on three legs and before you know it, they're living life just as easily as they did on four! The secondary part of treatment is chemotherapy. Because this type of cancer is very aggressive, it is very likely that it has spread to other parts of his body although not visual yet on x-rays or blood tests. Therefore, four to six rounds of chemotherepy are recommended to fight off any spread of the disease.
As you can imagine, cost associated with this treatment is large and regretably, I don't have pet insurance (I strongly advise pet insurance if you don't already have it for your pet!). Surgery and chemo combined is estimated to be about $10,000. I'm starting this page in an effort to help with these costs.
His life expectancy will be variable on the effectiveness of treatments and determinate on if the cancer has spread. Rookie is a huge part of my life, my family's life, and my friend's lives, and although his length of life is not guaranteed, I am determined to provide him with his best chance at the best quality and opportunity for life. He is still his happy, goofy self showing no signs of slowing down. I'm hopeful that he'll win this battle!
