Rookie robotics team goes to WORLD championship!
Donation protected
Taper Avenue's five-month journey from being a rookie robotics team to qualifying for VEX IQ World Robotics Championship 2023...
October 3 - "Hey, let's try doing robotics, it sounds like fun!"
February 3 - "Oh, wow! We won the 1st place teamwork championship award in our local robotics league... we qualify for California's State Championship!"
March 4 - "Holy, cow! We just qualified for a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP robotics competition!!!"
March 5th - "Um.... how on Earth can we pay for this!?!"
Our group of 10 and 11-year-old elementary students managed to go from zero knowledge and experience with robotics, to winning the local league championship - beating teams that are from middle schools and doing robotics as a class every day. From there they ranked high enough at the state championship that they qualified for the VEX IQ Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas this May!
While this is a dream come true for our students, neither they nor the school were prepared for the expense of their success. Because our school has never done robotics, there is literally no budget set aside for the team - we received a donation from Mr. Leroy Nelson (thank you!) to purchase the first kit and join the local league. Our school emptied its coffers to pay the registration for the state championship, as it was an achievement too good to pass up. However, the word championship cost far exceeds anything our school could ever imagine donating. This brings us to the wonderful Go Fund Me site and we are now at the mercy of our fellow Californians, people with a passion for robotics and engineering, and all other generous citizens of the world. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO THIS WORTHY CAUSE, AND BE A HERO TO OUR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS! No donation is too small... just donate the cost of your morning coffee. At the same time, no donation is too big... feel free to make a very generous donation as well!
Thank you, in advance, for your donation!

Taper Ave. Elementary is a K-5 school located in the city of San Pedro (Southern California) where 51% of our students qualify for Title 1. Our robotics team includes 5 fifth-grade students - 2 girls and 3 boys - all of whom are from our 'magnet' program. The magnet program allows students from various parts of Los Angeles to attend a school of their choice that is not necessarily near their home.
