This March, Russian occupants shelled houses in the street in Irpin (near Bucha), where Kate and Anatoliy used to live happily for ten years. They built their house together and raised two sons. Used to be a quiet and peaceful neighborhood their children will remember as their home.
Back Story:
In August 2000, Anatoliy Sakhno (Tolya) arrived in VA. He was an international exchange student, but the dorms weren't ready. We volunteered to host one student and couldn't have had a more likable young man to host.
Since the 2000/2001 school year, we have considered Tolya, our Ukrainian son. We have visited his family, and he has visited ours. We adore his wife, Katya (Kateryna Shapovalova-Sakhno), and have met her parents and visited their home. Katya and their oldest son, Sasha, spent a month with us in WY in 2018. Gini was scheduled to spend a month in Irpin in June!
But in March, everything changed when the Russians began shelling their neighborhood, and they were forced to flee in the middle of the night! Later in the month, their second story was destroyed and their vehicle and yard.
While the house is heavily damaged, God saved its ground floor, and as a sign of hope, Tolya plans to return to get the door and windows on the first floor repaired and some covering on the home. He hopes to prevent further destruction of the house he and Katya built together by preventing water damage until they return and rebuild.
Anatoliy has skilled builders ready to begin, and the extent of what can be constructed is only limited by the amount we can raise. It is a sign of hope for his family, extended family and the neighborhood.
Thank you for considering this project of hope!
Funds will be distributed to Anatoliy via PayPal.
