Ron's 2023 Blue Cross 500km Challenge

Hi, my name is Ian High and I'm looking to raise funds in support of my Aunt (Jane High) and her very special UK born canine detection doggy Ron.

Here in Zimbabwe there are a range of annual charity challenges which motivate us to get out there and keep fit. The Blue Cross Ultra Marathon has to be one of the most fun. It is top of the list if you want to see the stunning terrain of the Eastern side of Zimbabwe. Imagine walking, running, cycling or motorbiking 500km from the lowest point of Zim, at Chilo Lodge in the riverbed of the Save, to the highest point of Zimbabwe, Mt. Nyangani. Whilst you do that you are also a participant in the most important annual Animal welfare fundraising event in Zimbabwe.
That is the Blue Cross and this spectacular event happens every August.
This year our retired explosive dog Ron received special dispensation from the Blue Cross organizing committee to participate in the Teams event. He is no ordinary dog. Born and trained in UK as a Canine Detective (explosives), he was deployed in 2016 to Timbuktu in Mali. Checking vehicles entering UN Compounds, checking buildings and suspicious packages left in public places, a quiet big dog always willing, always doing his best for his handler.
Ron was retired in 2022 and is now quietly transitioning from a highly disciplined working dog to my friend and walking companion.
It took Ron three months to stop going into a car park anticipating that I would ask him to check vehicles. Sometimes just going off and checking them himself. Indicating with a sit down staring directly at me there is a weapon here. We would go to a social braai or informal gathering where other dogs were playing around, begging for bits off the braai and he would go lie near the cars waiting for work.
Six months later and how he loves the Chimanimani mountains! Swimming for his ball, mouse pouncing, trotting languidly ahead of me. A big quiet gentleman of a dog.
The Blue Cross provides Ron and I with a great challenge. And we need your help to raise funds for the SPCA.
