Estamos desesperados y ya no sabemos qué hacer.

Nuestro gato Simba —quien además da nombre a nuestro espacio cultural “Leo Vermell”— está gravemente enfermo.

Llegó a nosotros cuando era un bebé; más adelante, al hacerle los análisis de sangre habituales, recibimos la noticia: Simba tiene SIDA felino. Fue un shock enorme al principio, hasta que supimos que muchos gatos con este diagnóstico pueden llevar una vida prácticamente normal. Simplemente son mucho más propensos a infecciones. Simba lleva ya casi cuatro años con nosotros y hasta ahora todo había ido bien.

Mientras tanto, su hermana Baghira, que en realidad estaba completamente sana, desarrolló asma, algo que puede ser extremadamente peligroso en gatos. Solo en pruebas de sangre y medicación ya fueron 1.000 € de gastos.

Nuestra familia ha vuelto a crecer desde entonces. Amaya, una gatita callejera que perdió a su madre durante unas fuertes lluvias y que maullaba pidiendo ayuda en nuestra calle, fue acogida con cariño por los otros dos. Afortunadamente, sus pruebas dieron negativo. Aun así, ya nos ha generado bastantes gastos veterinarios debido a dos infecciones. Esta semana toca esterilización con pruebas y microchip: 208 €. En dos semanas, las vacunas. Son gastos que, por supuesto, habíamos previsto.

Pero ahora Simba se ha visto afectado de una manera mucho más grave de lo que jamás hubiéramos imaginado: tuvimos que ingresarlo en el hospital con fiebre muy alta, donde permaneció dos días. Ahora lo estamos cuidando en casa; por suerte, tengo algunos días libres. Sin embargo, solo estos dos días, junto con todas las pruebas y medicamentos necesarios, han supuesto casi 800 € (!) en gastos. Despues otra visita más medicina 64 €, y todavía no ha terminado. Habrá más visitas al veterinario y tal vez más exámenes.

Simba es parte de nuestra familia y rendirnos no es una opción. Es aún muy joven y tiene la posibilidad de vivir muchos años más con buena calidad de vida.

Lamentablemente, hace dos años ya atravesamos una racha muy mala en lo económico: empleadores que no pagaron, una empresa que me estafó, etc. Aún no nos hemos recuperado completamente de esas pérdidas. Para nuestro espacio cultural esto significa que, por el momento, no podemos continuar, ya que la reforma está paralizada y ni siquiera tenemos espacios privados para nosotros. Falta dinero por todas partes. Nos gustaría seguir aportando algo a la comunidad, pero detrás de nuestros eventos hay muchísimo tiempo y trabajo, y ahora mismo debemos centrarnos en generar ingresos, ya que nuestros salarios corresponden a la realidad económica española.

Y cuando Simba vuelva a estar sano, por supuesto le haremos un seguro veterinario

We are desperate and don’t know what to do anymore.

Our cat Simba — after whom our cultural space “Leo Vermell” is also named — is seriously ill.

He came to us as a baby; later, when we did the usual blood tests, we received the diagnosis: Simba has Feline AIDS (FIV). At first, it was a huge shock, until we learned that many cats with this condition can live mostly normal lives. They are simply much more prone to infections. Simba has been with us for almost four years now, and until recently everything was going well.

In the meantime, his sister Baghira, who was actually completely healthy, developed asthma, which can be extremely dangerous for cats. Blood tests and medication alone already cost us €1,000.

Since then, our family has grown again. Amaya, a stray kitten who lost her mother during heavy rainfall and was crying for help in our street, was warmly welcomed by the other two. Fortunately, her tests were negative. Nevertheless, she has already caused considerable veterinary expenses due to two infections. This week she is being spayed, including tests and microchip: €208. In two weeks, vaccinations follow. These are all costs we had, of course, planned for.

But now Simba has been hit much harder than we ever could have imagined: we had to bring him to the hospital with an extremely high fever, where he stayed for two days. He is now being cared for at home; luckily, I have a few days off. However, just these two days, along with all the necessary tests and medications, have already resulted in nearly €800 (!) in expenses. And it’s not over yet. More veterinary visits and probably examinations are still ahead.

Simba is part of our family, and giving up is not an option. He is still so young and has the chance to live many more good years.

Unfortunately, two years ago we already went through a difficult financial period: employers who didn’t pay, a company that scammed me, and more. We have still not fully recovered from that damage. For our cultural space, this means we cannot continue at the moment — necessary renovations cannot be completed due to a lack of funds, and we simply don’t even have private space for ourselves. Money is tight everywhere. We would love to keep contributing to the community, but our events require an enormous amount of time and work, and right now we must focus on earning income, especially since our wages reflect the Spanish economic reality.
