Our beautiful daughter Romi Reign Mehic was born with Spina Bifida Mylomeningocele, the worst form of Spina Bifida. This is where the neural tube does not form or close properly, meaning Romi was born with her spinal canal open along several vertebrae and needed a major operation to have this closed within the first 48 hours of her life. Due to the severity of Romi’s Spina Bifida she also has Hydrocephalus (Fluid on the brain) which she had to have another major operation for at 2 weeks old to fit a VP shunt which will help eliminate a build up of the fluid in her ventricles.
Romi is now doing well and recovering amazingly, despite this she still has a lot of weakness in her lower limbs and can currently only move her left leg, although minimally.
To help Romi get as much movement out of her lower limbs as possible, she is able to under go a treatment called Spinal Stimulation, which helps increase muscle tone and therefore increases function and mobility! Unfortunately, this is not available on the NHS at the minute and will come at quite a cost financially.
Myself and Liv have been looking at doing some fundraising to help cover the cost of this treatment and hopefully raise some extra to give to Birmingham Children’s Hospital who have been and continue to be absolutely amazing with caring for our beautiful daughter Romi.
We have a few ideas up our sleeves to help fundraise, so keep your eyes peeled and please get involved where you can!
Thank you to everyone for their kind messages and support along our journey, we are grateful for each and every one of you.
