Art projects in Europe

Donation protected
1. My immediate goal for this year is to photograph in refugee camps in the USA and Europe

2. What I plan is to teach art in the camps and also document this process.

3. Also, I will be conducting personal interviews with individuals experiencing life in the camps, such as aid workers, volunteers, and refugees.

4. The photos will be part of a series of essays chronicling this experience and will be exhibited and published.

The current crisis has taken place in Turkey, and Europe drew me to travel there and to explore the conditions refugees are facing. My project began in Istanbul, Malta, and Sicily. The documentation is meant to highlight the migrant and refugee story and those involved with the process of housing and resettling them. I documented those living on the streets in Istanbul, in the open camps in Malta and a resettlement project in Sutera, Italy. As a documentary artist and art educator, I chose to photograph this project as well as teach art in the camps.  I am in need of funds to purchase art supplies in Europe. I will be conducting art education classes for students and community projects. I am estimating 30 students per class. The lesson plans will include self-portraits, oil pastel on toned paper, a group mural on a roll of the canvas using acrylic paint, altered books, block printing, and photographic essays. All the work will be framed and exhibited at a community center. The art projects are designed to express the story of their lives and to share with the public.
