Roger's Situation: "Four long years ago I had a serious stroke. I'm told I almost died. I was in a coma for a couple of days. Ever since then I've been confined to bed, unable to walk. My left side went practically dead. I don't have a droopy face and though I can move my left side it's drastically impaired. OMG! Want a harsh look at reality? Try spending four years in bed! I have to be helped getting up, getting carted to the toilet and eating lunch in my wheelchair while I watch tv every day. Recently I contracted pneumonia for the second time. I've never been closer to death than I was yesterday. The barrier separating me from the other side was thin! And I didn't even care. Death would be calm in comparison to the harshness that is my existence and the crap that is my present and future. This whole health system, which I always took for granted that it's here to guide us back to health. Well it isn't! I have to fight the system everyday to get healthy. In the last couple of years my muscles and tendons have been "contracting." It's caused my ankle, especially on my left side, to curl under. My toes point and my ankle turns in. As a result I can't put my weight on that foot. So all the health professionals involved have the opinion that my ankle will never straighten. So they are doing nothing. Their approach is to do stupid little exercises while we all wait for my ankle to completely curl, thereby passing my last chance to straighten my ankle. I am holding onto the hope that there's still a chance to straighten that ankle. I've devised a couple of contraptions that should straighten my ankle. But the manager of the facility where I live is totally interested in covering their ass liability-wise and completely disinterested in helping me to recuperate. My PT wrote a letter approving one contraption, but it's not enough... in the place where I live I'm receiving the bare minimum of care. Enough to keep me alive but not to promote my wellness. If I don't get back on my feet soon, I will wither away to nothingness. It's my last chance! Now or never! All or nothing!"

Roger was and is a fine human being. Gifted with size and strength, he never bullied or belittled anyone. If the shoe were on the other foot, he would be there for you.
