On January 18, 2021, Roger Loewen received devastating news. After many doctor appointments, brain scans and, blood work, the answer to Roger's indecipherable symptoms was Bulbar Onset ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - a degenerative disease of the nervous system.
ALS became more widely known as we watched our friends and families dump buckets of ice over their heads to raise money for this incurable disease. However, the annual cost of ALS treatment after the diagnosis can range anywhere from $16,000 - $200,000 per patient. As you can imagine the burden those affected and their families share is heavy and the prognosis - uncertain.
Roger has spent his life doing what he loves most - being outdoors! His time has been filled with fishing, camping, hiking, and exploring as many places as possible with those he loves the most. He has always been a selfless, dedicated family man, helping others whenever there is a chance. He is a mental health counselor for people in crisis by day and a volunteer firefighter by night. However, in the coming weeks, months, and years the ability to engage in these activities will become increasingly more difficult - one by one.
His rare diagnosis was followed by a doctor's note. One that required him to turn in his scrubs and firefighting gear far before he was ready..
The Loewen's are always the first people to give and the last people to receive. So, our hope in starting this campaign in their honor is to raise money to relieve some of the financial stress of keeping Roger's life filled with joy, hope, and comfortability. This will require specialized treatments, therapy, mobility, and modifications to their home. If you feel lead to donate or share this story, we would be very grateful.
